Break in on Marine View Drive

One of the residents on Marine View Drive had their property vandalized this past week. Be sure to secure property and increase your awareness of any persons within the community who do not belong here. Pay extra attention to any strange activities. This is the second breakin within the past couple of months. Let's pull together and do all we can to keep our community safe.

New Murals for Shorehill Cabana!

If you missed attending Saturday's workparty and community meeting, y0u really missed out! The weather was beautiful on the canal and although there were just a handful of community members in attendance, we accomplished great things and shared good quality time with our neighbors and guests.

Keith scraped and repainted the fascia boards on the cabana.

Corrine cleaned the bathrooms and helped cut the vegetation away from the roads.

Many helped with not only enhancing the appearance of our neighborhood but also ensuring we have good drainage this winter.

Karen cleaned the storage shed at the cabana for the first time in at least 10 years. Looks amazing!

Dennis weedeated, cleared ditches and sprayed all of Alta Vista!

Brooke and Judy cut scrubs, ivy, tree branches, blackberry vines and anything else that needed cutting.

Ron cleaned the ditch on Baja Vista and trimmed ivy and tree limbs.

Karl and Tom pick up and hauled all the cuttings and dumped them.

Pete of course cleaned our water reservoir so that we can all contine to have clean drinking water.

Sandy and her mom, with critique from her dad and some help from the girls painted the beautiful murals you see in this posting for our cabana. They are in storage for winter but will be hung before spring! What a beautiful addition to our beach area! They will truly brighten things up and add an additional touch of class! Thank you SOOO much!

Nancy worked hard at clearing vegetation while Jerry worked hard at repairing damage from vandals on their property.

Barbara provided moral support and good food.

Sally helped as always in making calls and making sure we had what we needed.

We blew the debris from the roads, had trees cut down at the water shed so they wouldn't fall on the reservoir, and concluded the day with an information-filled board meeting and a satisfying potluck. Thanks to all of you who joined us. It was a very good day!

The next morning Pete and Judy loaded up and hauled hundreds of pounds of junk and old cement from the storage shed to the dump! Thanks so much!

SPECIAL VOTE - DUES INCREASE

Over the past few years we have experienced significant financial impact due to two major floods and the need to repave our roads, replace our docks and maintain our water system. While we as a community have thus far been able to come together to meet the challenges through assessments, we have recognized for quite some time that our financial infrastructure must be updated to provide a more appropriate base to meet the current maintenance and growth needs of our community.

At the spring community meeting the board presented our proposal for increasing dues to begin to bring our finances in line with our needs. Our hope is that by doing this it will also minimize the need for assessments.

PS - The permit package (county permit, SEPA and JARPA permits) for replacing our pier and docks has been submitted to all the appropriate entities. We anticipate hearing something back by the end of July. As we hear more we will let you know.

Bob Radnich Passed Away on April 20th

Robert Bruce (Bob) Radnich died on April 20, 2011, of complications following a stroke on December 23, 2010.

He was born in March of 1928 in Tukwila where he grew up and attended school. He graduated from Foster High School in 1945. He worked at Puget Sound Power and Light Company for over 43 years before retiring in 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughters Linda, Judy, and Karen, granddaughter, Sara, one sister, three brothers, and many nieces and nephews. At his request there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Children’s Orthopedic Hospital of Seattle or to the charity of your choice.

Bob and his family have been members of Shorehill Estates for many generations. On behalf of our community I send our condolences to the entire Radnich family.

Necessary Reminders

Barking Dogs and Dogs Not on Leashes
Over the past six months there has been an increase in complaints about barking dogs and dogs not on leashes. Many times owner's dogs are barking when they are left home alone either during the day or at night. The barking is usually continual during the owner’s absence. Owners may or may not be aware of the constant barking however it is disturbing to the rest of the neighborhood, many times disrupting sleep or time spent at the canal attempting to relax and enjoy weekends or holidays away. Some dogs are also being allowed to roam the neighborhood without their owners. Please be sure you are being responsible with your pets and considerate of your neighbors. Enjoy your pets but please keep in mind that you would not want to hear other people's dogs barking all the time nor using your yard rather than their own. Thank you all for taking action to ensure the barking is controlled and that your dogs are not running loose.
Guests Removing Clams and Oysters from Community Beach
Please also inform “guests” staying in your residence that removing buckets of clams and oysters from the beach is not allowed. Not only is it illegal but it may also lead to a depleting of the shellfish that the community residents paid to seed on our beach for their own use. Over the past year this has increased and it is visiting “guests” not community members guilty of the practice. Thank you for advising them to abide by community rules and regulations when they are using our beach and amenities.
Dues Must be Current in Order to Use Beach and Amenities
Based on community By-Laws and Covenants, those members with outstanding dues cannot use the beach and amenities nor allow any of their guests to use the beach and amenities until their dues are brought current. With warm weather approaching be sure your dues are not outstanding so that you can enjoy the canal to the fullest.
Inappropriate Use of Amenities/Inappropriate Conduct
Members are responsible for the conduct of their guests and are to be with guests when they utilize the beach, docks or boat launch or are to give them written permission to do so. Any guests using amenities without a member or appropriate permissions, or behaving inappropriately and/or using inappropriate language at the beach will be asked to leave.

Joe Feuerstein Passes Away

Joe and Neomi were members of the Shorehill Community for many years. Joe devoted many hours serving as President and active board member. He was a wonderful man. Those who were fortunate to know him will miss him greatly!

Joseph W. Feuerstein of Belfair - Jan. 13, 1929 to Dec. 21, 2010 veteran

Joseph W. Feuerstein of Belfair, WA, passed away Dec. 21, 2010. Unfortunately, his health had deteriorated since surgery in Nov. 2009. He was born to William and Christine Feuerstein in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from LaSalle College, with a BS in Industrial Management; Trenton Jr. College and Seattle University in Electrical Engineering. He was a veteran of USAF National Guard. He had a long career in Boeing Aircraft Company, 35 years, as program planning and control manager.

Joe loved to travel, play golf and enjoy many friends in Rancho Casa Blanca (RV Park) in Indio, CA. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus for many years while attending St. Francis Catholic Church in Burien and later, Prince of Peace Parish in Belfair. He spent his summers in Victor, WA.

Joseph married his first wife, Eleanor Huffman, (now deceased) and raised five boys: Gary (deceased), Joe Jr., Tim, Bud, and Jeff. He is survived by current wife Neomi Nelson, whom he married in 1992 and became stepfather to Tina (deceased), Lori, Nick, and Sandy; grandfather to 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren; He is also survived by sister Ruth Finn, New Orleans, LA

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Burien WA.Read more:

Quick Update on Clean Up

Dan and Pat from Northshore Nursery have cleaned the upper culvert and have been working, along with the county this week on cleaning up and filling Brooke Drive. What a difference from last weekend. It's beginning to look more normal around here. Once the basic clean up has been done I have asked Dan and Pat to give us a bid on any culvert repair replacement work that needs to be done in the future. I will keep you apprised but as for now everything is going well here at Shorehill.

County Scheduled to Clean Community Entry Tomorrow - December 14th

I spoke with the road crew manager and we are on their schedule for tomorrow, December 14th. They will work on the entryway to the community and North Shore Road. They will move the debris back into Brooke Drive to start filling the ravine in the middle of the road.

Update on Flood Damage

If anyone has ended up with extra shovels or rakes let me know. We and Goranson's are missing tools.

North Shore Nursery is currently working up on Brooke Drive to open up one of the major culverts and try to get the water flowing back into the proper channels. This will help if we have some more heavy rains. I have also contacted the county to get on their list for cleanup of the entry into the community since it is a county road. Pat from NorthShore is also going to talk to them about getting some of the fill they are picking up to fill Brooke Drive.

North Shore Road is now accessible. There are still piles of mud and debris on the road but one lane has been opened up so that you can get in and out. Use caution. Vehicles low to the road may have difficulty.

What a day! We had an amazing crew of people come out to help save the community as best we could. Pete, Sandy, Dennis, Chris, Trina, Tom, Sally, Ron, Gayle, Greg, Keith, Gloria, Bill, Randy, Harold, Paul, and Chrystal all showed up and did all that could be done in a fight against mother nature to help divert the water and avoid damage. We checked the houses on the waterfront and worked hard to keep the water from flooding. Everyone's homes seem okay at this point. As you can see from the pictures, there is alot of work to be done once the floods are over. North Shore Road has been closed most of the day. Ron and I went for a drive about an hour ago to see if any progress had been made to open up the road. In a 4 wheel drive vehicle we made about seven miles, crossing 4 major slides on the road. Huge piles of dirt are across the road. One side is opened enough that with a 4x4 you could climb slowly over. We then came across county trucks working and turned around. Here are some pictures. Pete also has a PDF file with lots more but I could not post the PDF file here. I believe he has emailed them to most of you but if you didn't receive a copy and would like one just email me and I'll get them to you. We'll let you know more as there is more to tell. Please feel free to call me if you have any specific questions about your residence. Thanks again to everyone to worked so hard today. This picture was taken later in the afternoon, after the rains had calmed down.

Flooding at Shorehill

I hate to report that we are experiencing flooding again at Shorehill. Brooke's cabin and Tom and Salley's cabin are doing okay at this point. Brooke Drive is not holding up well. Dirt and rocks are flowing down the center and into the entryway and the canal. Work at beach is doing fine. I will post some pictures soon. Ron, Tom and Pete have assessed the situation and are going to trying doing a little shoveling to divert water and rocks but the consensus is that there is probably not much we can do until after it stops. The volume of water seems to be the main problem. The work done behind Tom's cabin last time seems to be holding up well.

If you are at the canal and able to help Ron, Tom and Pete, please grab a shovel and come on down.

I will update the blog as anything new transpires.

4 Waterfront Homes Burglarized!

Four homes located on the waterfront of our community were recently burglarized. Liquor, sleeping bags, misc. items were taken, along with furniture items presumed to be used to remove items from the homes. Drawers and cabinets were gone through and homes were left in disarray. PLEASE HEIGHTEN YOUR AWARENESS OF UNFAMILIAR PERSONS AND ACTIVITIES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. If we together keep an eye out for the entire neighborhood and report any suspicious activity, hopefully we can help prevent the success of any future breakins. To those who experienced the recent breakins we are sorry to hear of your losses. Thank you for letting us know so that we can all work together to hopefully tighten up security within the community. If you need any assistance with clean-up, etc. please let us know.

For 35 years, popular University of Puget Sound economics professor Mike Veseth has used a distinctive personal approach, getting to know students individually and finding unusual – some might say bizarre – ways to help them learn and grow. Today, his fame goes national.

University of Puget Sound professor Mike Veseth shows how he uses the study of soccer and wine as ways to examine world problems from a political and social perspective. Veseth was chosen by the Carnegie Foundation as Washington state’s Professor of the Year.

In too many places, Mike Veseth says, college classes are like ATMs.
"They've become transactions," he says. "Students turn in papers and get grades. If that's all it is, then there's no relationship that's going to grow." Chances are no one will ever describe one of Veseth's classes that way.

For 35 years, the popular University of Puget Sound economics professor has used a distinctive personal approach, getting to know students individually and finding unusual – some might say bizarre – ways to help them learn and grow.

He teaches complicated international economic theory in classes about soccer and wine. He demonstrates educational principles through juggling and has been known to set heavy economic theory to music, encouraging students to sing and dance to the “Gross Domestic Polka.”
Veseth’s approach has earned him the adoration of hundreds of UPS students over the years. Today, his fame goes national.

Veseth flew Wednesday to Washington, D.C., and accepted the Washington state Professor of the Year Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

It’s a prestigious, competitive award, bestowed each year on professors who demonstrate “extraordinary dedication to undergraduate teaching.” Veseth learned about the award last week, but was asked by its sponsors to keep it a secret until today’s announcement.

On Tuesday, in his office on the UPS campus, surrounded by books, soccer paraphernalia, wine bottles and juggling balls, Veseth seemed slightly embarrassed by the award. “It’s a nice recognition of a lifetime of effort,” he said. “Personally, I’m pleased because of what it says about my students. My own mentors helped me so much, it makes me proud to think I contributed that to my students.”

Student testimonials figured into the Professor of the Year selection process, and the students who wrote in support of Veseth were lavish in their praise. Some went so far as to say he changed their lives.

“I was a prickly, argumentative and contrary student,” wrote Kirsten Benites, who graduated from UPS in 2003 and now lives in London. “Regardless of whether he personally believed my arguments, he taught me how to defend my position in a logical way.”

Theater artist Seema Sueko, who graduated from UPS in 1994, said she was a shy student and that Veseth’s popularity initially intimidated her. That feeling quickly disappeared, Sueko said.
“He transformed me,” she said. “He gave me a voice and laid the foundation for me to excel.”
Veseth is an instantly likable guy, with a muff of gray hair around his bald head and a big friendly smile. He picks up a soccer ball and acts as if he wouldn’t mind spending a few minutes tossing it back and forth.

He was born and raised in Tacoma, and his family background is classic for the area: A father who migrated out from the Midwest after military service in World War II. His dad was a blue-collar worker at the old Hooker Chemical plant on the Tideflats. Veseth graduated from Lincoln High School, where he was the editor of the school paper, the Lincoln News. He attended UPS as an undergraduate and got his masters and doctorate in economics at Purdue University.
With his Ph.D in hand, he came straight back to Tacoma and a job at UPS. He’s been there ever since, except for brief teaching posts at the American Institute on Political and Economic Systems in Prague, Czech Republic, and Johns Hopkins University’s Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna, Italy.

Now he lives with his wife, Sue, just three blocks from the UPS campus. He walks to work.
“I’m a lucky guy,” he said. Veseth is most famous for his teaching, but he has other academic credentials. He co-founded and directs UPS’s International Political Economy Program, an innovative interdisciplinary approach to the study of international and global problems.
He’s written several books, including “Mountains of Debt,” “Selling Globalization” and “Globaloney: Unraveling the Myths of Globalization.”

A new book, “Wine Wars,” due out next year, is based in part on globalization issues his students explore in his popular class, “The Idea of Wine.” Why wine? And why soccer?
Veseth lights up at the question. It goes to the heart of his teaching philosophy. Both are accessible subjects that students don’t have to struggle to work up an interest in, and they open up worlds of topics including racism, nationalism and marketing. His excitement is contagious.
UPS Academic Vice President and Dean Kristine Bartanen put it this way: “Being an outstanding teacher is not just what Mike does, it’s who he is.”

On September 24, 25 and 26th I will be walking in the Susan G. Komen 3-day 60 mile Race for a Cure for breast cancer. Crystal Gray from Shorehill Estates is also walking.

I would like to personally thank those of you who have donated in support of finding a cure for breast cancer. It has been an amazing year training for the event and fundraising. I could not have done it without the support of all my family and friends. Thank you so very much!

I invite you to attend the closing ceremonies at Memorial Stadium (near the Space Needle) at 4:30 pm on Sunday the 26th if you happen to be in the area. If not, please just think of me and also Crystal as we both walk the 60 miles.

Quite a process!

Before the paving starts, a gooey liquid substance is sprayed on the right and left side of the road but not the middle. The asphalt is 300 degrees when it is loaded into the dump trucks at the factory (I don't know where that is). When it gets here, the truck is skillfully backed up to the front end of a machine I call the paver. The front end of the paver is equipped with something like crabs claws which are opened to receive the load from the rear of the dump truck.

The truck and the paver look like they become one machine as they both creep down the street, with the hot asphalt dumping into the paver's front end and coming out the paver as 2" think roadway. The paver can pave up to 4" thick. After the dump truck empties it's load, the "claws" of the paver close up so that more paving material is forced into the paver's machinery. Another dump truck is soon backed up and the paver and the claws open up again.
As the roadway is laid, one operator uses a testing tool to monitor the depth of the
paving. Another operator steers the machine along the edge of the road (in our case, the curb) and constantly signals the truck driver to raise or lower the dumper of the truck to keep material flowing out of the truck.

After the paver goes by, a man comes along with a small compactor to compact the asphalt along the curb. Meantime, a roller works its way up and down the street to compress any seams and to smooth the roadway to a better degree. If any gaps are found the paving (as happened on Marine View, all the crew members carry shovels full of asphalt and fill in the hole, which is then compacted by the roller. It was quite a process and I enjoyed watching it. The roads look great.

CHANGE IN PAVING PLAN

Tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), beginning at 8:00 am ACE paving will begin paving BAJA VISTA and ALTA VISTA. On THURSDAY, beginning at 8:00 am they will begin paving Marine View Drive. At the end of each day roads can be driven on but during the day please do not drive on the roads being paved that day. Prior to paving they put a sticky substance on the roads, so walking on the roads is not recommended either. Should you have questions please contact Gayle or Dennis.

Paving Project Begins

The paving project will begin on Tuesday June 22, and be completed by Thursday, June 24. Here is the schedule.

Tuesday, June 22 – Prep work with grader and sweeper
Wednesday, June 23 – Pave Marine View and Baja Vista
Thursday, June 24 – Pave Alta Vista

The paving company will place a 2” overlay on all the main roads throughout the community. The pavers will be tapering the edge where the surface meets driveways where they are currently paved so there will not be an abrupt edge in those locations. If the driveway is gravel, that taper will not be done and those owners may want to plan for the transition.

If anyone in the community wants paving work done of their own property, this would be an excellent time to contract for that work. Mike from Ace Paving has made himself available on Monday, June 21, to meet with any property owners who are interested in obtaining bids and can schedule that work for you to be completed while they are here next week. Call Mike at 360-479-4200 to schedule an appointment for any private party paving work that is desired.

In Memory of Mary Elizabeth (Bryan) Gross - December 24, 1922 - May 29, 2010

In l980 Paul and Mary Gross built a beautiful house on Hood Canal and were active members of Shorehill Estates. Paul, along with other long-time Shorehill residents built the dock which is still used by all of us today and was instrumental in much of the building and maintaining of our community amenities. They loved growing a garden, entertaining, boating, crabbing and shrimping and Mary cooked the best fried Oysters on the Canal! They, like many other Shorehill families, taught their children to swim here on our beach. Memories made here on the Canal stay with our families for years. The family shared with me that just this past week one of the grand daughters brought her children here to play on the beach where she learned to swim with grandpa. The full obituary will be in Wednesday's Seattle Times. I could not paste it here in the blog but will forward a copy via email to those who may remember Paul and Mary. Paul was a Navy veteran and Mary a Marine. They served their county, their community and their family with pride and a dedication from the heart that I am honored to share this Memorial Day with all of you. They were special people and I feel very blessed to live in the house that Paul and Mary built. Services will be on Thursday at 9:30 am at Mt Tahoma Cemetery.

Summary of Meeting Minutes:

Members were welcomed and thanked for a good workday.

Gayle announced that Shirley's mother Harriette had passed away and that she had taken a Hydrangea plant to Shirley from the community along with a card.

Minutes from Fall meeting and financial reports were presented and approved.

There was a discussion about delinquent accounts and what was being done to collect.

Community was advised that liens have been filed on three residences.

There was a discussion regarding the idea of a "profit/loss" statement instead of present financial report format. The treasurer and board will explore the idea further.

The Assessment Vote passed

42 ballots were returned out of 48.

Vote #1 regarding spending $15,000 for repairing the crack and having Aquatapoxy liner sprayed in water tank passed - 41 Yes - 1 No

Vote #2 regarding borrowing from the water fund to begin paving project and then replenish water fund from the assessment funds passed - 32 Yes - 10 No

Vote #3 regarding implementing an assessment of $5,000.00 per family to be paid within 3 years after implementation; each community member being given the option of three installment plans passed - 32 Yes - 9 No

Gayle reported that the biggest issues with no votes were related to those who do not use the roads or those who do not use the docks and therefore do not feel they should pay.

The billing for the assessment will go out within the next couple of weeks and the first installment will be due July 5th.

Bylaws will be presented to the community hopefully by the September meeting.

Suggestion was made that we raise community dues to provide a better financial cushion.

It was reported that the water tank has been repaired and the aquatapoxy liner had been applied.

Bids for paving the roads were discussed. Dennis and Grant will proceed with narrowing down the bids and securing a contract for the paving of the roads.

Pete and Brooke discussed the dock project and the various bids obtained. They advised that the contracting process could take up to two years.

A summer picnic is being planned for August. Karen and Judy will take the lead and advise when a date has been determined.

I found this video on YouTube.com -- taken on December 13, 2009 from an unknown location, but it looks like it's not too far from Shorehill -- does anyone recognize the spot?

It you enlarge the video to full screen and watch carefully you can actually see the piling move as it struggles against the ice flow.

Good illustration of both the sustained cold temperature and the power of the combination of ice and tidal flow, which also damaged our pilings (see photos in the post below).

December's cold weather was so cold that Hood Canal was covered in a layer of ice. Some Shorehill residents said it looked like the layer of ice went from North Shore to South Shore.

The ice further damaged our dock, one resident's water pump (and many other facilities on the canal); note the leaning piling.

And the ice was still around on the weekend after Christmas.

The cold weather had it scenic moments, such as in these photos taken near Tahuya.

Thanks to an early morning crew of community volunteers, the docks were taken out this morning for winter repair and storage. Thanks so much to everyone who helped. Thanks to Tom and Sally for coordinating and making calls to get volunteers. The docks are being stored on Baja Vista in order that Tom and others can easily access them for desperately needed repairs. Hopefully we can put them back in May. Putting the docks in and out each year is another opportunity for you to offer to help. Between now and May, if you are here and would like to help, ask Tom if there is anything you can do to assist with repairs. Also plan to volunteer to help put them in during the month of May 2010. We'll gladly add you to the list and give you a call to remind you.

Fall Work Party

The Fall Work Party and Community Meeting were held on September 12th 2009. There was a significant lack of attendance at this work party. The core group of membership who were there did an outstanding job and worked extra hard in an attempt to make up for those not in attendance. While there was a good amount of maintenance on the community accomplished, there were many things which had to be left unattended to. It is crucial for the long term sustainability of our community roads, water system, beach, docks, and landscape that we all participate as a community for the good of our community. Our Spring Work Party and Community meeting will be held May 1st 2010. I ask each of you to please mark your calendars and make plans now to be here on May 1st. Many major decisions relating to our docks, roads and water system will need to be made this upcoming year. It will take the contributions of all of us to achieve successful outcomes. We have a great community and it is up to all of us to keep it so.

The work party focused on clearing brush from roadsides to protect the roads from winter weather. It is essential that ALL community members make sure that ditches are kept clear of debris and remove weeds from cracks in the roads. Please pay extra attention to water runoff and flow through our culverts during the winter months.

The Board of Trustees meeting and the community meeting focused primarily on infrastructure: roads, docks and water facilities. Concerted efforts will continue toward planning for their repair, replacement and/or stabilization.

Roads: Grant consulted a friend with expertise in roads about the community roads. The expert advised to fill potholes and cracks, divert water away from the roads and to focus on maintenance. Grant, Dennis, Ron and Bill filled cracks and put sealer on a patch of road as a test to see how the material wears.

Docks: Brooke is obtaining bids on replacing the pilings, docks and piers, which are seriously deteriorated. The permitting process for replacement could take up to two years. The board is considering an assessment to pay for the project; any assessment will be put up for a community vote.

Water facilities: One of the tanks has a full-thickness crack. Pete will obtain a bid for repairs. Pete and Bill will investigate the possibility of lining the tank.

Bylaws: The board will mail or e-mail a proposal for bylaws revision. Community members will have until March 1, 2010, to submit further suggestions for revision. The community will vote on the revised bylaws at the May 2010 community meeting.

Please be sure to check the blog on a regular basis and stay attentive to happenings within the community over the winter months. You don't have to wait for the work party to do something you see that needs to be done. Every small effort contributes to our community maintenance efforts.

Water Hose Left Running At The Beach

Tonight I stopped by the beach and someone had left the waterhose near the boat round about turned on full blast. It had been on for quite some time as the ground and gravel were soaked. Please be sure when you use it to turn it off and if you are there with children, please check it when you leave to be sure they didn't turn it on and leave it running.

This could have severly minimized or depleted our water supply and we would not have water. Please be sure whenever you leave the beach to check the water and make sure all sources are turned off.

It is up to all of us to protect our community resources.

Be Kind To Your Neighbors

One of Shorehill's great treasures is the beach. Community members and their guests are welcome to use the beach — just clean up after yourself so that others don't have to clean up after you.

If you are smoking at the beach, bring an ashtray and take your butts and ashes with you.
Clean up the bathroom if you use it.
Take away any trash and litter.
Clean up after your pets.

In recent weeks, a few community members have had the dis-pleasure of removing other people's trash and debris. Clean up after yourself to show respect to your neighbors and the community.

No, there are no trash cans at the beach. That's because when trash cans were available, people would use them to overflowing and no one would empty them. The community does not pay for trash pick-up at the beach. So, it is your responsibility to clean up after yourself and your guests so that the beach is a pleasant place for everyone.

Thank you all for being respectful of your community by adhering to these guidelines.

The usual three rules for July 4 apply for July 4 so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable holiday:

Fireworks only on the beach; no fireworks within the community.
No alcohol on the beach on July 4.
Clean up after yourself, either after you are finished with your fireworks or on Saturday morning.

Please be careful on the beach. Supervise children closely, especially around fireworks. You are responsible for the actions of your family and your guests.

Please be sure to be responsible and clean up after your animals! Also, all dogs are to be leashed.

Limiting fireworks to the beach, restricting alcohol and cleaning up are designed for individual and community safety.

Also, please do not park boat trailers at the beach, or near the round about so as to make it difficult for others to utilize the area. All trailers should be parked on owners properties.

Water Problem Resolved - 8:59 pm

A relay switch was the cause of the water outage. Nicholson Drilling has manually started the pump and will replace the faulty switch tomorrow morning. Within an hour the water tank should fill to a capacity that it can be used. You may use the water tonight. Please be cautious not to overuse until the tank has a few hours to refill. By tomorrow we should be back to normal.

Water Outage - Tuesday 7:00 pm

We are currently experiencing a water outage throughout the community. PUD has been out to check the electricity to the bump. They have restored the electricity but believe there may be problems with the relays. Nicholson Drilling is on their way out to check the pump. We will keep you apprised. If you are able to turn off your water heater breaker, please do so until you are advised the water is back up and running. Any news will be posted on the blog. Minutes Summary — May 2, 2009

This is a summary of the minutes from the May 2, 2009, community meeting. Complete minutes will be presented at the next meeting, in September.

Financial Report: The majority of the community promptly paid assessments for repairs and improvements to the beach following the December 2007 flood. The loan from the water fund was repaid.

Roads Report: Discussion continued on what to do with the roads. After much discussion it was acknowledged that we actually have two major cost projects we need to deal with, roads and docks.

The community voted to direct the board to create a five-year plan to build a fund to address infrastructure needs.

Water Report: One of the tanks has had a slow leak for some time but it seems that it has not changed. Northwest Water has made some improvements to wiring and the chlorinator. In September we should work on controlling the water coming down the hill so it doesn’t wash away more soil.

Other Business:

The bylaws revision report was postponed until September.
The proposed community flag would have cost several hundred dollars so the project was dropped.
The cables for the driveway to the docks were cut. Some houses down the beach were broken into. Community members asked for an e-mail report on vandalism so they can check their properties. Community members were asked to be vigilant. · Darlene will pursue the channels to remove junk cars parked on one of the properties.
Brooke will bring a bid on the docks to the September meeting.
The board will meet sometime in the next 30 days.
Elections: Darlene was elected as secretary; Karen was elected as treasurer; and Bill, Dennis B. and Corrine were elected as trustees.

The next work day and community meeting are scheduled for September 12.

Spring Work Party

A soggy but enthusiastic work party accomplished a lot during the spring clean-up weekend.

Docks are in.
Pete cleaned the water tank and repaired a crack.
A large contingent planted the area by the boat launch.
An even larger contingent pulled clover and other weeds from the lawn (feel free to pull weeds whenever you are on the beach).
Dennis and Dennis worked on the irrigation and electrical systems, respectively.
Several people spread bark on the newly planted areas and around existing plantings.
The restrooms were beautifully cleaned.
Brooke and Grant put together the outdoor shower.
Brush was cleared along the roads, under the mailboxes and throughout the entry area.

Additionally, everyone enjoyed a potluck dinner and participated in the community meeting.

What an amazing March at the Canal. We've been enticed by sunshine and hints of Spring. A few flowers are starting to check out the climate. And, last weekend another snow storm complete with cold, cold nights and days reminding us of the winter we've had which closely mirrored our economical turns and twists. Weather Update

A report from a Shorehill resident as of the evening of January 7: All of the usual flooding suspects were within their banks. Although it was raining pretty good, things seemed to be holding up well. This area can stand quite a lot of rain, and, after last year's events, Mason County has upgraded culvert sizes and cleaned out clogged areas. It also appears that the county is being cautious during the current storm by surveying and cleaning where necessary.

One question is whether the section of North Shore Road at about milepost 11 closed by last year's deluge will hold up. The bank is precariously unstable.

Fritzi and John Highberg have been long members of the Shorehill Community. Fritzi was a wonderful woman. We will miss her smile and her sweet/positive spirit.

Highberg, Arlyle Jean

Arlyle Jean HIGHBERG Born on June 26th 1932 passed away on November 25th 2008 from lung cancer. She was 76 years old. The daughter of Clarence and Clara Fritz was born and raised in Wausau, Wisconsin. To her many friends she was known as simply "Fritzi". After graduation from Wausau High she went to Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she met John, her lifelong husband. They joined hands on June 14th, 1952. Fritzi worked as a laboratory/x-ray technician in Seattle, Wichita and Idaho. She later became interested in real estate and was an agent on the Eastside for over 20 years. Fritzi loved the challenge and especially each and every client. Many of whom she has remained in contact with to this date. She is preceded in death by her parents and son John Gregory Highberg. She leaves behind her husband John of 56 years, daughter Sandra Kay Sadowski and son-in-law Steven Sadowski, grandchildren Tyler, Erik, Nicole, Gregger and Kara; great grandson Jacob, sister in law Velura Highberg, nephews Roy Scott, Bruce and Gary Highberg, niece Lynne Watkins as well as kin in Wausau and a host of friends. Fritzi will be remembered for her love of family and living life. She was a loving, caring woman who loved people and was loved in return. Fritzi was an avid golfer, bridge player, loved to travel and spend time at their retreat on Hood Canal. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue on Wednesday December 10th at 1:00 p.m. Remembrances should go to Somerset Women for Medic 1 and Evergreen Hospice Center in Kirkland, WA.

Fall Meeting Minutes

This is a summary of the fall 2008 community meeting. Complete minutes will be available at the spring 2009 meeting, or are available from Gayle.

Financial reports for the community and the water system were presented and approved. Gayle also reviewed the expenses for the beach restoration.

The beach restoration project is progressing. Gayle reviewed the work and expenses so far and what is anticipated to finish the project. The assessment, approved by the community, will be billed in October with the dues billing.

Docks: Peter and Brooke will investigate what is needed to repair the docks and obtain cost estimates.

The Architectural Control Committee has taken steps with Mason County to address the derelict cars.

Past-due accounts: The community voted to give the board the authority to pursue collection in a manner that is in the best interest of the community.

By-laws revision: Sue agreed to chair a committee to review the by-laws; Sandy and Greg agreed to serve on the committee. Some issues already identified are (1) paying community members for work, (2) process for assessments, (3) damage to community property, and (4) use of Web, e-mail and other electronic technology for community business. The committee will develop a list of proposals for a community vote. Anyone who has suggestions can contact Sue.

Water system: Peter, Paul and Chris cleaned the water tank. A number of repairs need to be made. Peter and Chris will evaluate which work can be done by community members and which might require a plumber. Peter suggested that the community hire Phil to remove some trees that could damage the water facilities.

Other business:

The new chains and locks are on the boat turnaround. Existing keys will work in both locks.
The community would like directional signs on entering and exiting the turnaround and a sign indicating private property.
Gary proposed that we have a flag with the Shorehill logo. Sandy will investigate.

On behalf of the entire Board I would like to thank everyone who showed up for the work party on Saturday. Although the crew was small the accomplishments were great. A special thank you to Travis and Cambra, from the Bailey family. They were excellent help and we truly appreciate all the hard work. Thank you to Sue for her blog updates and the great pictures. Thank you to the consistent few who always show up and always work hard. Your dedication and consistency is appreciated and never taken for granted. You are great role models for this community.

As Sue mentioned in her earlier Blog, we look forward to seeing everyone on September 13th for the regularly scheduled, all day Fall Work Party and Community Meeting. The Work Party will begin at 8:30 am and the potluck will be at 4:30 pm at the beach. The more people who come, the more we can accomplish and the less we have to spend hiring outside help. It is also a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and work for the good of your community.

Thank you all for your votes passing the recent motion to fund completion of the beach restoration project. We have scheduled a "Special" work party for August 23rd from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. We can use all the help we can get! Make plans now to come help with the project. What a Great Crew!

Last Sunday, a Shorehill work party raked up rocks and spread topsoil on the beach in preparation for hydroseeding. With many rakes, the crew completed the work in less than four hours.

Many, many thanks to those who spent a hot summer day improving our community.

The deer family made an appearance but not on the beach.

Beach Restoration Project Update

Construction on the beach is progressing. Even though part of the beach is out of commission, the usual three rules for July 4 apply:

Fireworks only on the beach; no fireworks within the community.
No alcohol on the beach on July 4.
Clean up after yourself, either after you are finished with your fireworks or on Saturday morning.

Signs will be placed reminding residents and their visitors about the rules.

Please be careful on the beach and avoid the construction areas; some of the most sensitive areas may be roped off. Supervise children closely. You are responsible for the actions of your family and your guests.

Limiting fireworks to the beach, restricting alcohol and cleaning up are designed for individual and community safety.

Continue your weekend celebration on Friday, July 5, at Tahuya Day. Festivities start at 10 a.m. Tahuya Day is great fun for the whole family.

New sprinkler lines were installed

Work on the wall in front of the junipers (on the beach side) progressed

The light pole was moved to the right end of the junipers (as you face the beach from the road)

A row of landscaping blocks was placed in front of the junipers on the road side

Dirt was filled in behind the blocks and leveled on the parking area in front of junipers

Fill dirt was moved in behind wall being constructed on the beach

We are planning to relocate the shower that used to be on the light pole to a new location near the beach house

Pave a circular drive entry and exit near the boat ramp (& maybe in front of mail boxes)

Add a decorative island with some sort of scrubs or trees and perhaps a new Shorehill sign near the road across from Gayle and Ron's house

Add gravel in front of Junipers (on the road side)

Add some type of stepping stones on the left side of junipers where you enter beach area

Of course all progress is contingient upon having sufficient funds available. We will be providing a financial report of the project thus far to you in the near future and give you an estimation of remaining funding needs to complete the project.

Piling Breaks Away

Adding to our already full project list, the latest Shorehill event is the breaking away of one of our pilings. As you can see in the picture, one of the pilings to the right of the pier broke away during our latest bought of wind and waves. It is now laying near the boat dock, next to the finger pier it supports. Ron contacted Mason County and a pile driver on North Shore Road to gather information on repair costs etc. We will keep you aprised as we learn more about process and costs.

The new beach area is starting to take shape. Gary and his backhoe are moving lots and lots of dirt. Plans include a new turn-around to make boat launching easier, a retaining wall on the beach side of the hedge, a new grass area and new benches.

A few improvements from the May work party include new bathroom doors and new signs on the dock. Thanks to everyone who worked on these and other work party projects. They make the community a nicer place to live.

-President Gayle Robbins called the meeting to order at 6:00

THANK YOUS
Special thanks to everyone for coming out to work today. Special thanks to new member Bill Kennedy who came from his home in Colorado to join us at the work party.
Thanks from Gayle to the community for the flowers sent to her in sympathy on the death of her mother.
Thanks to all those in the community who have come out over the past few months to clean up flood damage. Thanks was also directed to those in the community who live at Shorehills and took so much of their own time to pull together and do what could be done during the time of the flooding and afterward. It was noted that the blog site and information sent to members helped to keep everyone appraised of the situation and clean up efforts.

MINUTES AND FINANCIAL REPORTS

Minutes: It was moved, seconded and approved that the minutes from the September 8, 2007 meeting be approved as posted on the blog and passed out.

Community Financial Report: There were questions concerning the lawyer's fees on the financial report. Gayle explained that these were the fees incurred when consulting a lawyer on our options of dealing with the community members who are severely delinquent in paying fees.

Gayle also explained that the franchise agreement has been obtained with the county and this explained the $200 fee on the report.

It was moved, seconded and approved that we accept the financial report.

Water Financial Report: The Water Financial Report was presented. Gayle reported that most of the members are currently up to date on water fees. It was moved, seconded and approved that we accept the water report as presented.

REPORTS

ROAD REPORT: Pete Goranson
-There is a recurring hole at the entrance of Shorehills. NW Water says that the only way to really find out what the problem is for sure would involve ripping up roads and some properties. It was decided that it would be repaired again when the beach repair is done. We will continue to try to determine the source of the problem. Ron Torrez may check with the county to see if there is something they can do for us. Several people had suggestions as to possible sources of help in determining whether there is water coming down due to a leak or culvert seeping.

OLD/NEW BUSINESS
- There was an extended discussion on how to proceed with beach clean up. It was suggested that if we are interested in making improvements in the lawn area and boat launch areas, that this would be the time to take care of such improvements since we will have to get heavy equipment in to repair the damage from the winter flooding. Several ideas surfaced: installing a circular driveway beginning at the end of the hedge that would allow a vehicle towing a boat easier access to the launch area, leveling the grass area and put in a decorative wall on the beach side of the hedge and finally planting grass or laying sod.

**It was moved, seconded and approved that the board be authorized to spend up to $10,000 to take care of filling the sinkhole, leveling the lawn at the beach, building retaining wall, putting in a circular driveway, leveling Brook Drive and assorted projects in a timely manner. Bids will be obtained and the board will make decisions so that this project can proceed.

Northwest Water wants more involvement in the community water system. It was decided that the board needs to work more closely with them and that choosing a water commissioner once again would be a good idea.

VOTING The following people were elected to serve the community. President: Gayle Robbins, Vice President Dennis Goldsby and Water Commissioner, Pete Goranson. Elected trustees: Brooke Scheib, Judy Radnich, Grant Lau and Tom Horn.

Other decisions:
There will be no July 4 picnic due to the condition of the beach area and lack of grass. If there is grass by then, it will be too young for activity.
New doors have been installed on the bathrooms at the beach and will be labeled for male and female.

Sandy's Noodles

In spite of a little rain and a little blustery weather, last Saturday's work party made great progress cleaning up the beach, the roads, the restrooms, the community building and other areas. We topped off the day with a potluck dinner and a community meeting. Karen will post minutes of the community meeting in the near future.

In the meantime, you can enjoy Sandy's excellent and popular Chinese Noodle Salad, which she shared at the potluck dinner.

Chinese Noodle Salad

1/4 cup sesame oil

1/4 cup black soy sauce

2 TBS sugar

1 TBS chili garlic sauce (adjust to taste)

2 TBS balsamic vinegar

17.6 oz package whole wheat pasta (there is enough sauce for an extra handful of noodles if you are serving a crowd)

1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds

2 green onions thinly sliced

In large bowl, whisk together sesame oil, soy sauce, sugar, chili garlic sauce and vinegar.

Cook pasta in boiling water until tender. Drain, rinse with cold water, and drain again.

With your hands, toss the pasta with dressing, making sure pasta is evenly coated. Add sesame seeds and continue folding pasta through dressing, literally "wiping" the bowl with the pasta. Top with green onions, and serve at room temperature.

Executive Board Met January 6th

The Executive Board of Shorehill Estates met on Sunday, January 6 to take up three items of business...

1. Flood Damage -

3. The Franchise Agreement -

The following is a synopsis of the discussion and decisions that were made. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Gayle Robbins or another member of the board.

FLOOD DAMAGE -
This month two dangerous trees have been cut to alleviate the potential of further damage. There are other trees in the watershed currently being assessed to determine if they should be removed or trimmed to avoid potential damage risk, while also avoiding any additional erosion possibilities.
It was recommended that we wait until the ground settles, stabilizes and dries out more before moving forward and doing more work on Brooke Drive, the catch basin and culvert.
In regard to repairing the damage at the beach, it was also decided to wait for drier weather to clear off the rocks, dirt and debris which covers the lawn and sprinkler system. We will investigate how best to redo the grass (sod or seed) and if changes can be made to the boat ramp area to make it more accessible. The current plan is that the docks will be put in early and extra work parties will be called to accomplish the extra work that needs to be done. The Board encourages all community members to become involved in the clean-up projects and these extra clean up dates. Many of the same people are showing up to help with the clean up. We need everyone's help that is able to do so. Dates will be posted on the Blog once they are scheduled and sent out via mail to those without internet access.

DELINQUENT ACCOUNTS
There are three severely delinquent accounts. An attorney will write
a letter to the property owners giving them a deadline to get their delinquencies paid. If they are not, aggressive collection efforts will be initiated either through assignment of the debts or further legal proceedings.

FRANCHISE AGREEMENT
The community has been offered a new option other than the Franchise Agreement explained at out last community meeting. We will be signing a Private Line Utility Occupancy Permit to satisfy requirements of the county. It will cost us $200 (rather than $400).

The Board plans to meet again on April 5.
The next planned work party is scheduled for May 3. Watch for notice of any additional work parties.

Research on Hood Canal Marine Life

A team of students and professors from the University of Puget Sound is studying marine life conditions in Hood Canal and I thought you might be interested in their research. Their recent work has focused on the large bacterial mats that have formed at the bottom of Hood Canal and seem to be affecting marine life. Hood Canal is experiencing low dissolved oxygen levels (see the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program website) and recently there have been reports of fish kills and dead zones. The Skokomish tribe has also reported that the bottom of some areas of Hood Canal are covered with bacterial mats (see Tacoma News Tribune article). To compare the bacterial mats in Hood Canal with those that we have observed in Commencement Bay, we are conducting a collaborative study with the Skokomish tribe and the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program. We are using underwater videography techniques and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map the distribution and abundance of bacterial mats in relation to water depth, sediment type, and water quality variables.

We are working with Dr. Mark Martin and his Microbiology students to identify the microbial community that make up the bacterial mats. We will be using microscopy and genetic sequencing methods to identify the bacteria. At this point we have tentatively identified the dominant bacterial type as the sulfide-oxidizing bacterium Beggiatoa spp. These bacteria are some of the largest known, and visible surface mats of Beggiatoa spp. have been observed in areas with low oxygen levels in the water column. The mats have also been regarded as an indicator of organic enrichment from either natural or anthropogenic sources.

The UPS team, under the direction of Biology professor Joel Elliott, has sent a research submarine down at several sites on Hood Canal to survey the bottom and assess the marine life conditions. Interestingly, one of the research sites seems to be just a few hundred yards from the Shorehill dock, so it gives some indication of what's happening in our part of the Canal.

Northwest Water Notifies Community of Possible Water Leak

Yikes! Another water problem!!! Today we received notice from Northwest Water Systems indicating our meter readings show excessive water usage. Typically when that happens it is an indication of a leak in the system. For those of you who have not been here for a while it would be appreciated if you would either check your residence or ask someone to do it for you who might be familiar with your shut offs, water lines etc etc. The thing to look for is excessive water standing on the property, soft spots, the obvious stuff like running water outside or the sound of water running inside. If anyone should discover they have a leak and needs assistance please feel free to send an email to Shorehill@gmail.com and we will make arrangements to get it taken care of as soon as possible. If you are unable to check your property yourself or get a neighbor to do it for you also please send us an email. The more people who check themselves the easier it will be to isolate the problem and remedy it. If you do discover a leak please let us know so we will be aware the problem has been found. More Clean-Up Progress

A small but mighty work party last weekend made significant, visible progress on cleaning up at Shorehill. Sandy took these photos that show just how much work was done. The entry, for example, looks terrific.

Sand, dirt, gravel and other debris were removed from grates and drainage was restored.

On Brook Drive, slag was burned, trees were removed and Brooke's cabin was shored up. Brook Drive actually looks like a road again!

Tom Bunyan shows us how a real lumberjack gets ’er done.

After the holidays, the board will meet to identify what still needs to be done and the best approach for tackling those tasks.

Community Involvement Requested In Clean Up Efforts

Clean up efforts within our community will take significant time and commitment by all of us. All community members are encouraged to assist in the clean up efforts as they are able to. This Sunday, (12/16) from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm (as weather permits) we invite you to join us at the beach as another crew of members begins to tackle some of the clean up projects. We realize this is a busy time of year for everyone. If you are unable to come work on Sunday, we have made a list below of work that needs to be done. Any time you are at the canal and are able to make progess on any of these projects please do so. All efforts will help restore the beauty and stability of our community. The list below is only a beginning. As you see other areas which need attention, or if you have questions, please send an email to shorehill@gmail.com. We will keep you aprised of the progess, scheduled work days, meetings and areas needing attention via this blog.

Progess which has already been made:

Ravine on Brook Drive has been filled in - Road is now accessible

Brooke's cabin has been stabilized with fill being replaced under cabin - Mud and debris cleaned from inside and around cabin

Tom and Sally's cabin has been stabilized for now - until ground settles and dries

Restrooms and picnic area has been been worked on as set out in previous blog

Large ecology blocks have been placed to support home on beach which suffered major bulkhead damage

Some of the rocks from roadways have been removed

Work to be done:

Continual clean up of dirt and debris - Some of the areas which need to be worked on: beach area, boat ramp, basketball court, roadways on both side of North Shore Road, below Shorehill Estate signs

Culvert/grates at base of Brook Drive and at base of Alta Vista (which crosses road leading up to Bob and Millie's and Chrystal and Paul's) need to have rocks and debris removed and grates cleaned

All community roads need to have rocks removed off driving surfaces and along both sides

Debris from fallen tree on Brook Drive which has been pilled up across from Brooke's needs further burning

Area behind and beneath mailboxes needs to be cleaned

Brook Drive will need to be grated as it settles and dries

Additional work will be needed on Brook Drive past Tom and Sally's cabin and in area of watershed - Board will be meeting to discuss plan

Further work will be needed on damaged bulkheads (At present the bulkhead at the community beach appears to be holding up)

Small Work Parties Tackle Big Jobs

The bathrooms in the community center took a big hit in this month's storms. While Crystal and Paul did a back-breaking amount of work cleaning up the picnic area on the beach, Chris, Sandy and Pete tackled the bathroom. Many thanks to Sandy for sharing the photos and the report.

"Hey! Pete and Sandy," Chris said. "Wanna help me get to the bathrooms?" Being a good neighbor and all, Pete and Sandy said yes. It only took seven hours of digging. (Annika and Rebecka did their part by picking up wood on the beach and putting it in the fire pit — great job, girls!)

Perspective: the wheelbarrow sits about 32 inches high. Pete is standing on the top of the washed-in dirt. You can see the waterline on the bathroom door.

You had to watch your step before going into the women's bathroom.

Shorehill Visit

Mike and Sue visited Shorehill today and we were impressed with the amount of work that's been done so far. And equally impressed by the amount of work that still needs to be done.

A lot of clean-up has been done on North Shore Road. We saw where mud and debris had been cleared in many places, and experienced short waits at a few spots for on-going clean-up operations.

The Shorehill entrance looked pretty good.

Brook Drive, not so much.

We don't know if this area at the top of Marine View was damaged during the storm or if this is earlier damage.

The beach will definitely need some landscaping attention.

Mason County Makes Great Headway!

Wednesday morning's plan was to have my brother-in-law come out and begin some of the work putting the community back together. He loaded up his equipment and headed this way. I went to work and Ron to the doctor. When Ron got home Mason County had started moving the dirt pilled in front of the community back into the ravine on Brook Drive. He quickly called my brother-in-law and stopped him from coming over until the County completes what they will. He will come over Friday or Saturday and assess where we are at that point and what further will need to be done. Mason County has done an amazing job moving much of the debris off North Shore Road to allow drainage, access and help communities and homeowners start restoring things back to normal. It's been impressive to see how responsive they have been.

Today Chrystle Gray and Paul Black came down and told Ron they were going to work on cleaning up the bathrooms at the beach. Sally surveyed the beach homes and reported that she did not see any major damage there. Trina and Ron surveyed up Marine View Drive again. They reported all looked well.

Keith took some great pictures yesterday which I have added below. We will try to get some more pictures tomorrow which will show how much work has been done. The collaboration of everyone to help in anyway they can has been great.

Continued thanks to everyone! Several people have talked about coming out within the next few days. Access is no problem. I am back to work but will try to update Blog in the evenings. Flood Damage Update

The rains have ceased, the culvert has now been cleared, water is no longer rushing down the road and the county has moved the mud and rocks off to the side of the North Shore Road and cleared a path into the community.

We've taken a look around the community and all seems okay except the damage you see in the pictures.

Brooke Scheib said it so well in an email she sent me, "my heart is heavy, but we will all pull through and make our community pretty again." That is definitely true. That's the kind of community we are all blessed to be a part of.

Thanks to those here who have done whatever could be done to help, to include surveying the neighborhood, taking pictures, digging in the rocks and mud to uncover culverts, making calls, sending emails or posting information on the blog. Thanks also to those of you not here who have offered your support via emails and calls.

The Shorehill sign used to be taller than Andy. Hopefully this gives you a perspective of how deep the mud was in the entrance to the community.

You cannot currently get to our mailboxes as the dirt and mud have been piled even higher than these pictures show. This picture was before they moved the piles of mud and rock off the road. The piles are as high as the mailboxes.

As you can see from the pictures, the beach will also need alot of clean up.

This was taken from Ron and Gayle's deck. You can see the water and debris running across North Shore Road and at the top of the picture how brown the canal was with mud.

Taken from the back side of Brooke's cabin. You can see how deep the revene is that was created from the force of the water and it's path down to the entrance.

Pictures don't truly portray the event nor the damage. This picture shows how wide the revene became on Brook Drive.

We have contacted Pat at North Shore Nursery and we are on his waiting list. I also have a call into my brother-in-law who is an excavator to see if he would be available for the job. We have also talked about the possibility of renting a piece of equipment and doing some of the work ourselves. My thought is that there will be plenty for us to do but that it would be best to have someone come in and do the earth moving for us and lead us as to the best approach for tackling the project. Once we have a definite plan I will post it on the blog. We will need to have all the help we can get putting things back together but one of the first things will be moving the mud and dirt and rock back into the revene created on Brook Drive.

Brook Drive Suffers Major Damage

Ron took these pictures at approximately 12:00 noon today. Damage continues to increase. It is now almost 1:00 pm and things seem a little calmer for the moment. Hopefully it will continue to improve.

Rain & Snow Runoff Flood Shorehill Estates!

Rain and snow runoff flood our peaceful community. Our thanks to Greg and Keith for the pictures. Major flooding is on Brook Drive. We will keep you aprised. It is now 11:15 and the winds are beginning to blow. If anyone wants to call, Ron and I are at home (360) 275-4038 and we would be happy to give you an update.
